I Hate It Here? – A Surreal Success in Denmark

In March, Denmark’s emerging theatre-makers unleashed something wonderfully strange at the Denmark Civic Centre. I Hate It Here?, a sharp, hilarious new script written by participants of the Southern Edge Arts Theatre Program and directed by Deb Edmondson, delivered a bold, unpredictable performance to our community.

Every so often, a show comes along that captures the brilliant, creative spirit of Denmark: the humour, the willingness to embrace the weirdly wonderful, and the drive to amplify youth voices across the Great Southern region. I Hate It Here? did exactly that.

Inside The Facility

Set inside "The Facility," a chaotic world filled with shifting hallways, bizarre pies, conspiracy-hungry detectives, and staff who definitely knew more than they were letting on—the performance was outrageously funny, surreal, and entirely original.

What made the show so special was that it was written entirely by young people aged 16 to 27. At a time when youth voices are too often overlooked, this group of writers and performers delivered a production that moved the way they move: sharp, energetic, and completely their own.

"It’s been incredible watching this theatre work develop so quickly. Classic Denmark. Young creative people with strong ideas about our world and what’s happening in it. It’s a testament to the years and years of work by Debra Edmondson, empowering students at Denmark Senior High School." Annette Carmichael, Artistic Director, Southern Edge Arts

A Fond Farewell

At the edges of the rehearsal room was Theatre Director Deb Edmondson, whose steady presence helped the cast take risks without fear. Supported by experienced actor and teacher Milu Green, Edmondson’s leadership was the quiet backbone of this production.

This performance marked her final show in Denmark before heading off to teach in Kalgoorlie, making the event a wonderful opportunity to celebrate her impact, her humour, and the artistic courage she has fostered across our community over the years.
