Hip Hopshop

As requested, Moondog J is offered his Hip Hopshop in the summer holidays. He is a multitalented musician and dancer who has worked with Morganics and Optamus (member of Downsyde). Symantha Parr – SEA’s dance tutor says: “ Jeremy really engages with the dance crew and is an encouraging teacher and amazing performer. His classes are fun and mixed up to include music, video, dancin and rhymes. “

After watching the student’s Freestylin hip hop act at SEA’s recent showcase, Simon Clarke, SEA’s Artistic Director reckons, “Hip hop never fails to energise a crowd and is a universal form of dance expression that is athletic and energetic and downright cool!”

Students learnt hip hop and break dancing, starting with the basics and then advancing their skills. They Got their top rock down pat, prepared for windmills, flips and other power moves and moonwalked better than Michael Jackson!

B Boyz and B Girlz brought their attitude and some flashy sneakers to these cool workshops.

Steampunk Design Workshop

Inventive kids made, created and test drove props, accessories and games, creating an authentic and otherworldly Victorian era sideshow alley in Steampunk style. The fantastical ‘Kracken’ was covered in paper ready for its final touches, so that it can be captured and paraded into the boatshed as part of Carnivale D’Mar, Southern Edge Arts’ first production for 2012.

Old fashioned games were made. Mums and dads (or Grandparents) might remember bobs and coits. Could you knock over a tower of tins in one throw? You can test your strength, and what about a magnetic fishing barrel? You’ll never know what crazy fish like being you might hook on the end of your line.

Simon Clarke, SEA’s Artistic Director has been involved in some of the previous Steampunk workshops. “Its exciting to see the richness of imagination that Steampunk has inspired in the young participants so far.”
Characters that have emerged from young minds include: Lady Skullem the Kracken bounty hunter, Princess Rosie’s Emporium – purveyor of Fine Kracken blood, Gaudy Gems, & Taxidermy. Missyology the Fortune Teller, Mind Reader and Supplier of Fine Snake Oils. One young workshop participant reports that it was, “quite possibly the best day he’s ever had”.

Steam Punk Workshops

In preparation for 2011's City of Albany Christmas Celebration free open workshops were held to build costumes, characters and activities on the theme of STEAMPUNK: CHRISTMAS STARS.

We looked for and found mask characters and roaming performers of all sorts; stilt walkers, jugglers, unicyclists, statues, contortionists, you name it and we dressed it up as ‘steampunk’. And if you’re wondering what steampunk is you can Google it. Wikipedia describes it thus:

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually Victorian era Britain — that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or more recently Philip Pullman.

We had Sandy O’Doherty, Jane Davies and Simon Clarke will leading the workshops, with special guest artists (and steampunk aficionados) Skot McDonald and Michel Ludwig.

Puppets, masks and sea monsters at Southern Edge Arts’ Holiday Program

SEA offered a holiday program with a difference for the October school holidays. Visual Artists, puppet makers and performers Sandy O’Doherty and Jane Davies worked with interested youth to develop a visual concept for SEA’s first performance project in 2012 “Carnival Do Mar” as part of the Festival of the Sea in 2012.

Carnival Do Mar will provide an immersive environment for an audience, reminiscent of the old sideshow alleys and pier fairs, with clockwork and mechanical ‘fortune telling’ machines, laughing clowns, puppet booths freak shows, aerial circus displays and clowns on stilts.

Participants will be involved in the conceptual development, design and realisation of characters, puppets and other carnival features, including design and construction of a giant “Kraken” (Sea Monster) and various sea creature morphs a la “Pirates of the Caribbean”. The Puppets, masks, costumes and props created during the workshops will all be part of the 2012 Festival of the Sea mega spectacle.

Workshops will run Monday to Friday during both weeks at the SEA venue on Sanford Road (PCYC Building). The morning sessions will be open for all ages from 5 years, for the under 8 year olds we invite parents to attend and assist their children, as there will be a lot of hands on crafty activities.
The afternoon session is for children aged 11+

LAUGH IT OFF - Every life contains a great story.

This workshop introduced the fundamentals of live storytelling, by using various narrative structures through a series of written and verbal exercises. Students learnt what it takes to engage the audience, be truthful on stage and present a performance piece that makes the crowd gasp and giggle. Students were encouraged to embrace their humility and identify stories based on their own life experience that contain a universal truth eveyone can identify with. Participants developed one 6-8min story ready for performance to a live audience at the conclusion of the workshop.
Be surprised how engaging the truth can be.
