2010 - SEA's Silver Anniversary Program Announced!

To celebrate our 25th Anniversary Year, Southern Edge Arts had 3 major performance projects lined up!

1. FESTY SHORTS - A FESTIVAL OF SHORT PLAYS

Kicking off the year is Festy Shorts, a festival of short plays that celebrates young voices! Emerging from our 2009 project SpringBoard, where young writers worked with Sydney playwright, Mary Rachel Brown, to create several unique scripts, Festy Shorts is an opportunity for teams of young people to become involved and take on the challenges of directing, designing and producing their own works by forming small companies.

Participants will have guidance from theatre professionals, who will run introductory workshops in specialised fields (directing, design, lighting etc.), share the benefits of their professional experiences and then continue to act as creative consultants and mentors, providing advice and/or assistance where it is required.

A highlight of the Festival will be the inclusion of emerging Perth artist Tim Watts’ underwater odyssey, The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer.
Project Partner: Bankwest

2. THE COLOUR OF FORGETTING - 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION PROJECT

The Colour of Forgetting is a physical theatre and circus performance inspired by local events and stories, set in and around the Albany Port. It explores the themes of isolation, exile and acceptance through the story of a crippled boat seeking shelter in a foreign harbour and how the locals respond. A young girl stretches the boundaries of her new-found independence beyond the comfort of her guardian, the Harbour Master – a man locked in the past, dwelling on the dangers ever present while growing up and ignoring the importance of being able to learn from one’s own mistakes.

The Colour of Forgetting will employ illusion, movement, circus, animation and puppetry to create a visually intoxicating show that will delight audiences of all ages. Participants will work alongside local and nationally renowned professional artists to achieve a high quality artistic outcome.

Project Partners: Albany Port Authority & The Great Southern Factor Inc.

4. MURDER BY THE SEA - IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BUZZ DANCE THEATRE

Inspired by the dreariness of Albany’s winter and the teenage tendency towards the macabre, SEA will work in collaboration with Buzz over two residencies to create an original “Cluedo-esque” performance with and by SEA members during 2010.

The first residency (April 2010) will focus on improvisation, task workshopping and phrase development combining the motif of stormy weather and its effects on the psyche of local residents, with the theme of murder, crime, suicide and ghosts. The second residency (October 2010) will culminate in the development of an original work to be performed in Albany in October and then will be performed at King Street Arts Centre in Perth to coincide with the Awesome Festival in November!
